Turbidity Curtains, or Silt Curtains, Silt Barriers, or Turbidity Barriers, as they are sometimes called, are floating barriers used in marine construction, dredging, and remeditation projects to control the silt and sediment in a body of water. Golden Gate Turbidity Curtain Install

Elastec Type III Ruffwater Screen was installed June 1 - 2, 2015 near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA. as part of the Crissy Field Drainage Improvement Project. Duane Bennish and Bill Andrus of the Cocoa branch were on site to help with the installation.

There was an existing drainage pipe that extended out into the water, but over time, the beach widened and the pipe was getting sediment in it and becoming blocked. It was difficult to clean out, so the remedy was to extend the outfall back out into the water.

Extension of the pipe will increase drainage capacity, reduce sand build up, and alleviate flooding issues. A ā€œUā€ shape of curtain encompasses the worksite so that any disturbed sediment will not pollute the surrounding water, wildlife, and marine life. The install was high profile and was monitored by the media, California DOT, and marine biologists. Crissy Field falls under the National Park Service jurisdiction.

"On behalf of Caltrans I would sincerely like to thank you and your crew for our turbidity control curtain. Thank you to the Elastec family for assisting Caltrans in designing a Best Management Practice that has been both cost effective and has exceeded our expectations in performance.

Recently I was observing the waves onsite crashing against the shoreline - the winds were so strong they were blowing our plastic covers about; however, the turbidity curtain remained intact and during dredging operations there was no visible notice of turbidity outside of the curtain! It performed like a champ!
